Santa Cruz Council Friends of the Rail & Trail was formed by a small, passionate group of transportation advocates who recognized the potential for reactivating the 32-mile rail corridor that traverses the spectacularly diverse landscape of our coastal region from Davenport to Watsonville. Our vision has always been to expand access to public transit alongside a safe, car free, continuous cycling and pedestrian path. This was a practical rethinking of an existing resource and simply the right thing to do. Since our founding in 2002, we have functioned as an all volunteer group. Our volunteers have worked diligently to raise awareness and catalyze community engagement by:
- Encouraging residents to express their opinions to decision-makers in writing and in person
- Educating the public, agency staff and elected officials
- Partnering with other local and regional nonprofits
